Pre-shearing instructions:

Please:

  • Make sure your sheep are dry. During wet weather, this may mean sheltering them for a few days prior to your scheduled shearing date

  • Withhold feed for 8hrs prior to sheduled arrival of shearer. This makes it more comfortable for the sheep, which is therefore easier on the shearer, and keeps the shearing mat and wool clean. (Always keep fresh water available to the animals at all times).

  • Have your sheep penned and ready when the shearer arrives. If you need help moving sheep, please let the shearer know ahead of time to discuss your needs.

  • Let the shearer know ahead of time if you plan on having the shearer trim hooves.

  • If you plan on saving your wool, please have boxes or bags ready.

  • Provide a flat, clean, dry, well-lit area approximately 6'x8' for the shearer and his equipment. Outside is usually best, weather permitting.

  • Have adequate helpers on hand for handling and moving sheep. Again, if this isn't possible, please discuss with the shearer prior to your scheduled shearing date

***We love farm critters, especially dogs, but please keep curious k9s, kitties, etc secured away from the shearing platform.

***It is very important to us to ensure our shoes and equipment are clean between each shearing location. We sterilize before we leave each location, and we have our own basins, brushes and bleach, but we request each location to provide us with a couple gallons of hot water.

***For cold-weather shearing (40F degrees and colder), it is important to squeeze the sheep into tight confinement area for a few hours prior to your scheduled shearing time. This will allow the body heat from the sheep to keep the lanolin warm, making it possible to shear. Trying to shear through cold lanolin can be likened to spreading refrigerated butter on a slice of bread, vs the ease of nice room temperature butter.  :)

***Keep in mind the amount of strenuous labor the shearer experiences. Andrew is generally humble, and will rarely make verbal requests. Please try to be as respectful to these written instructions as possible.

***If you are able to offer coffee or water, etc it would be much appreciated

And above all, PLEASE, if you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask. We look forward to working for you.
